Oh, this is a fun question! Honestly, it just depends on the type of maternity session you want. For both in studio and outdoor sessions Moms can go ultra glam and wear a maternity gown and look like the maternal goddess they are OR they can keep it super casual and wear jeans with a cute top. I don’t really have a personal preference but I would strongly recommend wearing something that makes you feel really good and comfortable- whatever that is.
While I’m on this topic though I do want to point out that most professional Maternity Photographers I know do invest in beautiful dresses for their clients to wear so if you are considering wearing one, save yourself the money and find out if your photographer has a studio closet. If so, most likely there’s something in there for you to wear for your session! Most women do not realize but a beautiful gown purchased from a vendor who specializes in maternity-wear will cost us anywhere between $150- $500! I’ve spent as much as $740 on ONE dress before- YIKES! : /. It actually kills me just a little when I have a client tell me that they found their dress they’re wearing for their session on amazon really reasonable only because I’ve invested thousands of dollars in dresses that look amazing on camera and are well made for them to wear… sigh… Obviously I want them to look and feel their best for their session so if that other dress works, then great! I just want my clients to know they don’t have to go that route and I’ve got their backs! I want them to look and feel their best for their session because I know that then they will LOVE the photos I capture for them in doing so!
